Our history

A look back from where god has brought us
The first Silverleaf Baptist Church’s congregation had its Genesis in September of 1935.  The church’s name originated out of the Silver Leaf Monthly Club.  The first pastor of this local assembly was its founder, Reverend J. W. Yancey, along with his wife Mother Jannie Yancey.  The Lord called Pastor Yancey home in 1948. Following Pastor Yancey’s pastoral leadership were:  Reverend Charles Jackson, 1 ½ years; Reverend Charles Lewis, 2 ½ years; Reverend W. H. Gresham, 8 years; Reverend W. H. Culverson, 14 years; Reverend W. B. Shorter, 1 year; and Reverend Bobby L. Giddens, 1982 – Present.

In the mid-fifties, the church relocated to this present site from its original location on Piedmont Street near downtown Atlanta.  The Brethren, Deacons J. W. Yancey, Jr., Johnny Mapp, Sr., Henry Weaver, George Perry, Westmoreland, and Minister Isaiah Whitfield and other members completed the sanctuary where we currently worship.  We are blessed to still have three of the longest living members:  Mother Delores Wallace and Sister Mary Davenport.

In February 1982, the current pastor, Bobby L. Giddens and wife Jacqueline, along with their two daughters, Cicely and LeeAnne were called to shepherd this local assembly.  During the Giddens’ tenure, a Fellowship Hall has been built and the church sanctuary was extended 20 feet, adding on a Chapel, a Conference Room, and two additional rest rooms.  The late Deacon J. W. Yancey, Jr. donated furniture for the Conference Room and the Pastor’s Study. Assisting Senior Pastor Giddens is First Lady Giddens and the Ministerial Staff consisting of Pastors Myra Pearson, Tangela Shape-Coleman, Donna Bruce-Jeter, Mildred Clayton, Darrnell Long , and Luvenida Gay.

In late 2018 the City of Atlanta and Silverleaf Baptist Church came to terms on the sale of the property located at 291 Martin Luther King Jr. Dr, thereby paving the way forward for Silverleaf to relocate to the nearby Thomasville Heights community of Atlanta. The church was able to secure the the new location at 1923 Turner Road SW with the help and grace of God. The Turner Road location was dedicated in December 2018 with a celebration of members and supporters praising God for His mighty works.

Longer range plans are being developed to add a gymnasium and additional classrooms on the property for special events, camps, training's, community meetings and other such activities not just for the members of SLBC but for the Thomasville Heights community so that Silverleaf can serve as a cornerstone in the community for years to come.

We know that we stand on the shoulders of giants that came before us and who laid the foundation for Silverleaf and who we will become. With Pastor Giddens at the helm and a membership dedicated to serving people, the sky is the limit for SLBC.
